Your website most often represents the first impression of you and your business. Before anyone contacts you it is likely they have done internet searches and visited your website. But which first impression will they actually get? We have listed seven common design slips.
One of the most common mistakes we come across are unclear goals and targets. What are we hoping to achieve with our new design? What targets do we need to reach? Some argue that clear goals and expectations kill the creativity, we argue that it provides a solid foundation that allows the creativity to blossom.
Who are we addressing? The reality is that if we try to address everyone surely no one will ”listen”. Don’t be too vague and generic! Rather, make sure you are specific and talking to those you want to be really relevant to.
When arriving on a website and noticing that no updates have been made in 4 weeks, most visitors will loose confidence in the business. The same applies if the design or photo material appears old and outdated. It is in some ways like squeezing in to those jeans you wore in 2003, thinking they are just as cool now. They are not! It’s as ”wrong” as buffalo-boots in 2015.
Did you save costs on your photographer, copywriter and designer? And are you still wondering why your website does not yield results? Think of your web-developer as you think of your doctor – find one that you trust and build a relation. Only this way your website will become truly ”healthy”.
Within the web business it’s referred to as ”Call to Action”. The key question is – what do we want visitors to do on the website and does the design allow this or encourage it? A web-shop with no ”Buy” button will sell nothing. Simply put, every element on your website must lead on to something else – a next step. Do not leave any dead ends.
”Less is more” – somewhat depending on the context – but in general this rule applies: 1 page, 1 message! IF something does not directly contribute to clarifying the message, it does not belong on the page. Majority of professional web-designers know this, but not everyone.
Websites and services are ongoing processes. They are not like a cake that is ready after X minutes baking in the oven, but rather something you work with and develop upon continuously, week after week! If you spend the necessary time on technical solutions and content, only to pressure your designer to deliver something in half a day – you will surely regret it!
Have you ever thought about designing and sewing your own suit or evening gown? – no probably not, because you would not want to risk it failing and looking all wrong. But for some reason many believe they can design and build their own websites. However, just like it is in sports, everybody can work out on their own, but if you have the ambition to compete with the elite, you will need to get help from professionals such as coaches and nutritionists and so on. In the same sense, without the help of professional designers, you can not compete with the elite of your branch of business.
